PADDLE BOATS VS PEDAL BOATS

Choosing Between Paddle and Pedal Boats: Which Kayak Is Right for You?

If you are looking into getting your first kayak there are hundreds of options, and the choices can be daunting. Let’s narrow it down to the main two types of propulsion: paddle and pedal boats. Let’s also focus on recreational, and fishing kayaks.

Paddle kayaks are obviously propelled by your paddle. For example, the Jackson Coosa X. The main reason to choose a paddle kayak are the places you’re planning to take it. Since these kayaks typically have less of a draft, they are great for shallow waters. Running rivers, Shallow lakes, and getting up into the flats where others can’t easily reach. Running shallower can get you exploring new areas most people don’t get to see. Getting into backwaters is a good way to get into unpressured fish and wildlife.

Pedal kayaks have one real advantage and that’s the hands-free aspect. Popular models from our customers include the Hobie Pro AnglerNative Titan X, and Old Town Sportsman PDL. Fishing, photography, etc. are much easier when you can use your feet to propel the kayak. There are a few different types of pedal kayaks you can choose from depending on brand and movement. Hobie Kayaks have a back-and-forth flutter motion with the fins, other brands use a bicycle method like a recumbent bike. Demoing each type will be beneficial to find out what style is easier for you to pedal.

So, if you’re looking at getting into skinny water and away from pressured water, a paddle kayak might be for you. It will be easier to paddle through shallow water, but you might not be able to cover as much water. Pedal kayaks will help with the hands-free aspect and covering more water while fishing and recreating.

Before choosing a kayak, the best option is to demo as many as possible if possible before purchasing. I highly recommend reserving a demo appointment with Next Adventure Scappoose Bay Paddling Center to try out their full fleet of kayaks. That way, you can find which kayak has the features that best suit your needs!
