A few folks from Next Adventure and some friends hit the John Day River this past week for a multi-day paddle: 44 miles of abundant II, II+'s and a couple class III rapids on the North Fork from Dale to Monument . We put in on Camas Creek at Tollgate Campground just North of Dale and paddled for three days (camping two nights, riverside) to the county park & boat ramp in Monument. The put in, Camas Creek, is swift without eddies and a bit of a heart pounder to get in with all the gear and go for it. The run is fairly remote and if you swim and lose a paddle or your boat (yikes) the hike out would be a long one. We paddled the run unscathed though, and a day ahead of schedule- the extra time to prepare to re-enter civilization was a nice bonus. If you're interested in taking a multi-day paddle trip like this one, here are a few helpful tips we can offer up from our experience. Click image (top left) to see more pics. |
