Pyranha Scorch: Kayak or Hovercraft?
I had the opportunity to try out the new Pyranha Scorch on the Green Truss section of the White Salmon this past week. I have to say that I was happily surprised by how much I loved this boat. I am 6’1’’ and fluctuate from about 185lbs to 190lbs. Before getting in the kayak I had some reservations after looking at the specs. With the large size being 9’1’’ long I figured it may be hard to turn and be just a bit unwieldy overall. This was far from the case.
While paddling the boat the first thing I noticed was how well it held a line. I could point and shoot without having to take multiple corrective strokes along the way. I’d say this has to do with its well-defined edges that run the entire length of the boat. This is an awesome feature that isn’t seen in a lot of creek boats out there. Those edges also make the boat really responsive to quick maneuvers and edge transitions. I'm sure this will come in handy with hard ferries and must-make moves while creeking or paddling big water. Another feature of the hull was the secondary stability. Typically planing hulls offer much less secondary stability than displacement hull designs, though with the Scorch I felt like I could hang out on edge all day long.
The Bottom Line:
All in all this boat is fast, responsive, user-friendly, and has the best combination of high rocker and defined edge of any creek boat on the market.
