Are you interested in starting a new activity that is a great workout and allows you to see some amazing places most people will never see? This 2.5 Day Whitewater Kayaking Course is designed to introduce students to Whitewater Kayaking starting with a basic understanding of the gear needed, and how to paddle safely in local destinations. This course will introduce river hydrology, safety-rescue techniques, strokes and maneuvers and help build the basic foundations for whitewater kayaking. After taking this course students should feel comfortable paddling with friends on local waterways.
Day 1 Friday: We’ll be meeting at Columbia Pool 7701 N Chautauqua Blvd, Portland, OR at 8:30 pm and getting outfitted with equipment and going over the foundations of rolling. Expect to be done around 10:00 pm.
Day 2 Saturday: The day will start at Next Adventure Paddle Sports Centers classroom at 10:00 am with information about how to find the flows of our local waterways and how to find the ideal paddling spot for you and the the group. We will also go over hydrology and basic river concepts.
After going over some great information we head to the river! Once on the river we will utilize all of the skills we have learned at the pool and in the classroom and start learning new river running skills.
Day 3 Sunday: On the third day you have the option of meeting us at the shop at 11:00 am and carpooling to the river or meeting us at the takeout(times will vary depending on the river). On this day we continue refine the skills we learned on previous days as well as go over basic on the river safety and start working improving our skills of reading the river. After these three days students will be ready to get out on their own with the knowledge and skills necessary to go on their Next Adventure!
