Immersion research’s core measurement for men’s tops is chest size. This would be the measurement used to buy a sport jacket or suit. If you are like many kayakers and don’t own a suit, this measurement can be taken around the chest directly under the arms. Take this measurement with no more than a t-shirt on. Just for reference, Immersion’s ”large” jackets are made for 175 lb, 6′ tall fit model.
The measurement Immersion uses is based on the size jeans you wear. If you wear a 34″ pair of Old Navy jeans, you will need a size 34″ pair of surf shorts. Please note that as the human population (not just the US anymore!) gets larger, a 34″ pair of pants typically measures out be between 35-36″. How flattering! For spray skirt tunnel fit, go by the men’s waist measurement sizing. Immersion’s spray skirts tunnels are on the tight side- this is to keep you dry, and because neoprene stretches over time. If you are not sure what size to get, or if you want a more comfortable fit- choose the bigger size.
Women’s Jackets/ Rash Guards/ Tankinis
The core size here is the bust measurement, which is taken right under the armpits across the shoulder blades at the “fullest” part of the chest as the say in the garment industry. Just for reference, Immersion’s fit model for a women’s medium is 5″5 and weighs 135 lbs.
Women’s Shorts/Pants/ J-Lo Spray Skirts
Most of Immersion’s shorts are meant to fit relatively low on the hip, so use your hip measurement as the starting point. For the women’s specific J-Lo Spray Skirt please use the women’s waist measurement for tunnel sizing.
